Nanking

1920s

1616 1/2 Fourth Ave.

A large downtown Chinese restaurant with a deep stage and potted palms. Singer Esmeralda Edwards played the Nanking and Frank Waldron often played there in the mid’-’20s with the Odean Jazz Orchesra, later led by pianist Archie Jackson. The club is notable historically because most downtown establishments did not allow African-Americans to perform.
