Chinese Gardens

1929 – c.1946

516 7th Ave. S.

Charlie Louie opened this Chinese restaurant to great fanfare, including an announcement in the Seattle Times saying the accent would be on Chinese and American food as well as entertainment. Despite his high profile, Louie also served boottleg liquor. Frank Waldron hired a teenage Phil Moore to work with him at the club, and singer Evelyn Williamson appeared here with Palmer Johnson. The Chinese Gardens was raided in 1931 and shut down, but reopened clandestinely and remained open off and on until 1946.
