Noodles Smith operated this club in the building he bought and ran as the Golden West Hotel, one of the few hotels in Seattle where African Americans were permitted to lodge. Palmer Johnson remembered playing the Little Harlem, which normally advertised its musicians only as “The Little Harlem Band.” Smith later opened the Ubangi in this same location, after the Little Harlem closed, probably after being raided in 1936 by the liquor board.
