Washington Hall

1920s-1960s

153 14th Ave.

The site of Seattle’s first documented performance specifically called “jazz” and played by locals — Lillian Smith, in 1918 — Washington Hall, which opened in 1908, houses a mid-sized theater with a large stage and wraparound balcony that has served many Seattle communities (Danish, Filipino, Japanese-American, African-American) over more than 100 years as a dance hall, concert venue and community center. It is still in use as a cultural center. Billie Holiday performed there in 1951 and Jimi Hendrix did, too, in 1960, with the Rocking Kings.
