A bar with this same name, and at the same address, still existed in the 1990s, but as a jazz venue the Mardi Gras hit its stride in the 1950s, when Pony Poindexter, Gerald Brashear, Milt Price and Jabo Ward were regulars. Part of the lively music district that extended down East Madison Street to 23rd Avenue South, the Mardi Gras was operated by Wilmer Morgan, who also booked touring R&B shows.
